Griffonia simplicifolia is a climbing plant from West and Central Africa, from its seeds the tryptophan molecule is extracted. From the latter, the body synthesizes an essential amino acid : L-5-HTP (L-5-hydroxytryptophan), precursor of Serotonin and Vitamin B3.

Serotonin is a neuro-mediator : it induces sleep and prepares for the entry into the deep and REM sleep phases, essential for good physical and nervous recovery. Serotonin is secreted at the end of the day and is transformed into melatonin, a sleep hormone that regulates the circadian rhythm. Serotonin promotes healing (being stored in thrombocytes and being released during platelet coagulation).

The production of Serotonin is mainly (95%) located at the gastrointestinal level, as it is a mediator of intestinal peristalsis which allows good digestion and a regulated appetite. A small part of Serotonin production (4%) is located in the adrenal medullar glands and in the sympathetic nervous system ganglia. A tiny part of the production of Serotonin (1%) takes place in the central nervous system, thanks to the supply of tryptophan across the blood-brain barrier.

Vitamin B3 is very important for our energy metabolism and is often deficient in case of stress.
